Repairing the Windows 10 start menu

Using Windows 10 clean install, I was experiencing a strange bug: All of sudden I was not able to use the Windows 10 start menu. It was there but I could not push the Windows button or use the Windows key. A restart did not help, neither killing and restarting the Windows-Explorer task and trying the same with disabled security solutions.

  1. Press ctrl+shift+esc (ctrl on German keyboards = strg).
  2. Find and kill the Windows-Explorer task (right click on it to perform actions).
  3. Click on file -> new task.
  4. Enter Powershell and hit the return key. A new blue shell should appear.
Hint: Since Windows 10 you can use copy and paste / ctrl +c and ctrl +v.
  5. Enter Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)} and hit return.
  6. Enter Get-AppxPackage | % { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml” -verbose } and hit return.
  7. Afterwards click on file -> new task and enter explorer.exe

This did the job for me. Hope this will help you out also!
